Celebrating International Women’s Day

Dear Friends of African Women Rising,

This Sunday, March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day. The theme for this year is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”

It’s about time! Despite years of struggle, real change continues to be painfully slow for most women and girls around the world.

On a global scale:

  • 20.7% of all government ministers are women
  • 2/3 of the world’s 769 million illiterate people are women
  • 39% of rural girls attend secondary school
  • 12.8% of land is owned by women

Statistics like these show that the challenges facing women and girls are immense. It is true there are pockets of hope and change. There are now three countries in the world that have 50% or more women representatives in their governments – Rwanda 61.3%, Cuba 53.2% and Bolivia 53.1%. Yet, these are three countries out of 197.

African Women Rising addresses these issues every single day. We work to provide women with the resources and tools to become financially secure and independent through the Micro Finance and Agricultural programs. We support education for both women and girls through our Adult Literacy and Girls Education programs.

Our team has been active in Northern Uganda for close to fifteen years. One clear impact of our work is the profound increase in women’s political representation in local governments all across the communities where we have a presence. This is how Generation Equality becomes a reality.

Your continued support is what makes it all possible. Help us realize this next generation of empowered women.

With gratitude and appreciation,

Linda and the AWR team
